Privacy Policy
Last updated: 24 July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how SmoothGrain Studios LLC ("SmoothGrain", "we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Tenon website and application ("Tenon"). Our approach is to collect as little as possible.
1. Information we collect
- Account information. If you create a SmoothGrain account, we store your email address and authentication data. We support passkeys and do not store passwords in plain text.
- Subscription and license data. Your plan, entitlement status, and purchase history needed to provide Pro features.
- Waitlist and beta applications. If you join the Tenon waitlist we store
your email address, which page you signed up from, and any campaign attribution carried
in the link you arrived on (for example a
utm_sourceparameter). If you apply to the beta we also store the answers you give on that form: which Apple devices you own, how you connect them, your dock or hub, your Windows version and build, whether Secure Boot is on, your PC make and model, which Bluetooth radio it has, and anything you write in the notes box — together with a record of the consent you gave, meaning the exact wording you agreed to and when. These records are held in Cloudflare Workers KV and are used only to run the waitlist and to select and contact beta testers. Email [email protected] at any time to have yours deleted. - Support communications. If you contact us, we keep your messages and contact details so we can respond. This includes any diagnostics bundle you choose to attach — see section 3.
- Website analytics. Our site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or track you across sites. Our support form and our beta application form use Cloudflare Turnstile to prevent spam.
- Payment information. Payments are processed by our merchant of record, Paddle, which collects and processes your billing details and payment-card information under its own privacy policy. SmoothGrain does not receive or store your full card number.
2. What the Tenon app collects
The Tenon application contains no analytics or telemetry. It does not record how you use it, and it never sends device, input, or usage data to us in the background. It contacts our servers only to sign you in and to verify your license and entitlement.
The one exception is the diagnostics bundle described in section 3, which is created only when you ask for it and reaches us only if you choose to send it.
3. Diagnostics you choose to send
Tenon includes a Collect diagnostics command, which writes a zip file to your own PC so that you can attach it to a support email. The collector is read-only — it makes no changes to your system — and it uploads nothing. The file stays on your machine until you decide to send it to us.
The bundle contains:
- your Windows edition, version and build, your PC manufacturer and model, installed memory and last boot time, plus your computer name and Windows user name;
- the security state the drivers depend on — whether Secure Boot is enabled, whether memory integrity (HVCI) is running and, when the collector is run as an administrator, the boot configuration including whether Windows test-signing is on;
- your Bluetooth adapter's name, hardware identifier, manufacturer and driver version, and the status of the Windows Bluetooth services;
- which Tenon driver packages are installed on the machine, together with their file versions and build tags;
- the Windows device entries for your Apple devices and which driver is bound to each, including the names those devices report — an AirPods name, for example, often contains the owner's own name. These entries also include your devices' Bluetooth addresses, which we need in order to diagnose pairing and connection problems;
- the state of the Tenon services and their settings and status registry keys, and the local AirPods battery store;
- a list of recent Windows crash (bugcheck) events, and copies of small Windows kernel minidump files found on the machine. Minidumps are snapshots Windows writes when it crashes, for any cause — not only ones involving Tenon;
- the lines of the Windows driver-installation log, and of the Windows System event log from the last 14 days, that mention Tenon;
- only if you run the collector with its tracing option, as an administrator: a short live trace of the Tenon drivers' own log messages while you reproduce the problem — device connection events, which media key was pressed, pointer and touch data from the mouse or trackpad, and error codes.
The bundle does not contain what you type. Tenon does not log keystrokes:
there is no capture of typed text or clipboard contents, no screenshots, no browsing history,
and no copies of your documents or other files. The one thing to be aware of is the kernel
minidumps, which are raw snapshots of system memory at the moment of a crash and may
therefore contain incidental fragments of whatever was in memory then. The zip is yours until
you send it, so you can open it and delete the dumps folder — or anything else
you would rather not share — first.
A bundle you email us is treated as a support communication. We use it only to diagnose your issue and to fix the underlying bug; we do not use it for marketing or profiling, and we do not share it with anyone outside SmoothGrain. We delete it, and the copy attached to the mail thread, once your issue is closed and in any event within 12 months.
4. How we use information
To provide and maintain Tenon and your Pro features; to process purchases (via Paddle); to provide support; to secure our services and prevent abuse; and to comply with our legal obligations.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us run Tenon, under appropriate agreements:
- Paddle — payments, billing, and tax (merchant of record).
- Cloudflare — website hosting, web analytics, bot protection (Turnstile), and storage of waitlist and beta-application records (Workers KV).
- Neon — database hosting for accounts and entitlements.
- Resend — sending transactional and support email.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and our users.
6. Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide Tenon and for legitimate business or legal purposes, after which we delete or anonymize it.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and the CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. For payment-data requests, you may also contact Paddle.
8. International transfers
We are based in the United States and process data there. Where data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards as required by law.
9. Children
Tenon is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
10. Changes
We may update this Policy. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, take reasonable steps to notify you.
